A 250 V2 will never be a 500 V4 though, no matter how fast they become.
At the end of every season they always said the 500 had reached their peak, their limit, and they couldn't go any faster, and each year they did! I know the 500 most like wouldn't put a lap time in as quick as a MotoGP bike, but I think a "current" 500 (had they too had the last 3 years of development the 250's have had) would be faster than the 250.
Has anyone seen the programme "Bikes Aloud" where the moto journo rides Rossi's 2002/3 RCV? He said the bike was "so friendly, so confidence inspiring, easy to ride and push even as a novice", I don't think he could ever have said that about a 500, and probably wouldn't even ever been allowed to try on one!
It is testament to Honda that such an incredible machine can be built, and that so many riders can exploit it and ride it fast and smooth, but to me the sheer aggression of the 500 is what made it special, even more so the screamer that only the very very top handful of riders could tame.
