We often modify the NSR airbox, but given how expensive and difficult to find standard MC28 parts are becoming, I would suggest pod filters, as long as you don't mind the increased noise. (The bark from the carbs can be almost as noisy as the sound from the exhaust silencers!)
Open carbs give the most peak power, a [modified] airbox gives the best mid-range and the least noise, but also the least peak power, and foam pod filters are a great balance between the two. Almost as much peak power as open carbs, but with some dust & dirt filtration.
