Setting the RC Valves with the "dowel" method is the quick & safe adjustment used at the factory during [mass-production] assembly. For most situations, it works absolutely fine.
Using the HRC method is, of course, the most accurate way to do it, but I wouldn't worry too much on a stock motor as the gain is often barely noticeable. Really it's for when you absolutely want to fine tune every component to the finest degree.
