Personally, I'd have to say no, don't do it. Maybe get yourself a set of Enkies (or another set of Magteks if your budget will allow) and paint those gold, but they don't look right with gold wheels... wrong era. Only the '88 and '89 500 had gold wheels, and all the 250 Rothmans bikes had white wheels.

Now, if it were a Repsol, and you said "I've taken the wheels off and I'm going to get them finished in orange", I'd be offering you a lift to the refinishers!
