On the NSR I normally do two or three heat cycles. This is basically starting the engine up, and letting it come up to temp as you would anytime you start up the bike. Let the bike cool down completely between cycles.
After that, do about 10-12 miles below 9500 RPM, another 10-12 miles below 10500 RPM, and then another 10-12 miles below 11500 RPM. After that it should be ready to go. I would check the pistons/rings between heat cycles, and after the riding to make sure the rings are seating properly.
I do that by pulling the pipes, and look up the exhaust ports, running the pistons through a cycle with the bike in gear, and spin the rear tire by hand.
