If it's an '88 MC18, there are two CDI units, one for each cylinder, so it's unlikey that.
Check the stator and the wiring from the stator to the fuse box and rectifier.
Also check the kill switch and the IGN switch. Try bypassing the IGN switch with a bridge to discount it. Check and clean all the connectors between these components.
