Removing the lid is pretty extreme, and you'll probably bugger the mid range fuelling. A better bet is to make the intake holes bigger - I sawed off the two small holes and made it into one large one.
Others drill several large holes in the top and sides of the lid.
You can also take a blade to the insides and remove the web that splits the box in two - effectively doubling the size of the box.
Most extreme is to remove it altogether, but this is not ideal for road use as the motor will be very peaky.
