Indeed, but the competition that results in the title "World MotoGP Champion" is to gain the most points over a season, not to win either the most or in fact any races at all.
Nicky Hayden did defeat all oppenents in this competition and thus is world champion.
If it was race wins Rainey would have only won twice ('92, Doohan won 5, Rainey won 3), Doohan would have then won six times, Schwantz would have won twice ('89 he won 6 and came 4th, Rainey won 3 and came 2nd, Lawson won 4 and came 1st), Spencer would have won in '84 (he won 5 and came 4th, Mamola won 3 and came 2nd, Lawson won 4 came 1st).
But it's not.
