I don't think it matters. I may be wrong, but never really paid much attention to it!

I have noticed the little nipples (I do that a lot!! ) but figured, as there is often a hex imprinted on the other side from the sprocket carrier, that there were probably nipples on both sides of the rubbers when they were new!
