That could explain why the replacement went pop (unlikely though, as it would probably have (a) not worked off the bat, and (b) I doubt Matt would've installed it incorrectly), but it would definitely NOT explain why the original Honda factory item died.
It stands to reason that if the factory component failed, and then a replacement component failed, that the fault lay elsewhere and the capacitor failure was a consequential result.
