A massive improvement to the R5K can be had by fitting the F3 spec rear shock link plates.

The not only raises the rate of the rear spring, but raises the rear ride height, and consequently steepens the steering angle too. Pulling the forks 10mm or so through the yokes (triples) also makes a big difference.
As Dave says, a quality suspension rebuild is the most cost effective upgrade. I believe (but can't remember for sure) that an early CBR600 rear shock will fit with very little modification, so you may be able to find an old Ohlins/Maxton etc. and have that rebuilt to the correct weight. RS250 RWU front forks will fit straight in to the NSR clamps. If you use 1991 you get compression, preload, and rebound adjustment that actually works! You also get caliper mounts spaced for 296mm discs.
