If it's very minor pitting and not going to effect seals too much, up round the yokes (triple clamps) or tiny pit marks for example, you can clean it up with Autosol metal polish or even localised wet/oil sanding with 1200 Wet'n'Dry. Thoroughly clean the chrome after, and then give it a wipe with ACF50 to prevent any corrosion seeping back in.
This will stave off rapid deterioration until you are ready to have the stanchions re-chromed.
My MC21 sat under a cover outdoors for the whole winter with all the exposed metal areas wiped over with ACF50, and it looked exactly as I left it 6 months ago when I lifted the cover off. It's expensive, but really good stuff. I coat everything with it now!
It cleans really well too, especially caked/baked on 2-stroke "spooge" from stainless pipes and engine casings, but don't get carried away as it will soon become an expensive cleaning medium!
