In aother relatively recent thread, some people referred to using a spacer with the reed assembly. Is this necessary (and what effect does it have)?

I have the HRC rectifiers, new gaskets etc, but have yet to tackle the exercise in case I am missing an essential part. A spacer wasn't shown on the HRC parts diagram that I ordered from.
