Not necessarily, a peer at the wiring diagram reveals three wires from the sidestand switch, one to earth (green), one to the sidestand light (yellow/black) and one to the PGM (green/white), it'll be the yellow/black that turns the light on and off and the green/white that controls the sidestand down/in gear engine kill.
What I'd do is flick that pin out of it's plug out at the PGM end, it's the only green/white pin in the black plug and try again.
The only other thing I can think of that would kill it when you put it in gear is the clutch not clearing properly, just give it a decent handful of revs as you click it into gear but be ready for it to actually move!
