Last weekend I was up at the machinists and we compared the RS250 and RC45 axles side buy side. The RS is shorter compared to the RC45 and the hub is also. The HRC axle he has fits both the RC30 and the RC45 so that rules out the RC30 being the same as the RS250.

It does appear that the wheel/drive pin arraignment is the same as well as the wheel side of the axle. My RS250 wheel fits the RC45 HRC axle perfectly.

So I can't see any way of using the RC axle in the RS! Please let me know if you find differently.

We are going ahead with our axle modification and I'll let you know how it turns out.
