Hey guys, first of all I'm sorry that I'm posting this up here, but I need as
many opinions as possible in short time (within 2 weeks, so I can decide to return the bike or not) to get to know what kind of problems my bike has. I've also posted this thread on RGV forum too.
So I bought VJ22A 1995 Suzuki RGV 250 2days ago. This is my very first bike, and I have never driven a 2stroke before. I've ridden few 600cc's around the block, and cbr1000rr once for 1 whole day(day/night). I didn't get to test drive the bike before i bought it, because the bike was sitting at the seller's house with a flooded engine. The owner had to leave around 3oclock in the afternoon, so I just quickly wrapped up the deal.
I bought the bike for 1800 US dollars, with brand new michelin Pilot tires on them, with 12,000Km's on the odometer(working). The bike looks acceptable for its age, and it doesn't look like it has ran over 100,000Km's.
so here's my problem -
someone told me to perform a compression test.. what should the compression read?? in any readings (pounds or square centimeter or both)??
The bike seems to be leaking fuel... probably about 1/8 of liter per night..
i've only owned it for only last 2 nights, and before i bought it, the bike was flooded, so the mechanic unbolted the exhaust and unflooded the engine with a air gun from a compressor. when he was doing that, he did take off the cowl so I am not sure what's the reason for this fuel i'm seeing.
Another problem it has is... this morning when i was trying to start it, the kickstart wouldnt work... i had to push start on a down hill..
and
last night i accidentally started the bike up for someone with the fuel injection control valve on 'off' position and the bike was revving high when it was running out of fuel. shortly after, I restarted the bike with the fuel injection on 'ON' position and it had the same revving problem... I quickly turned off the bike and when i re parked it, i switched the injection control to 'off' last night. and this morning it felt like it was flooded... the bike wouldn't start with the kick start. I had to roll start on a downhill. being in first gear and using the clutch doesnt work on this bike, as in the bike won't roll in first gear with clutch pulled in. is that a mechanical problem?
And while i was warming up, the rpm was sitting around 3.5-4.5 (don't remember exactly) so i thought it was running a bit too rich, and I lowered the gas amount that is being injected by adjusting the little screw that controls the amount of fuel that is being injected. the mechanic had turned it to really rich i think, when he was re adjusting it after the flood repair.
so should I lean it some more?
and finally last problem...
while i was driving the bike, it had good power in the 6000+rpm range but the power seemed restricted or it felt like it was struggling around 10,000 rpm
area, although redline is at 11 or 12.. acceleration does feel very strong past 6+ area tho. I thought these were suppose to keep making power until red line?? is it because my bike is unrestricted you think? or is it because it needs a rebuild? (I'm not sure if it is unrestricted OR if it's rebuilt). the bike's acceleration feels almost as fast as the bikes from the 600cc class inline4 4cycles(i've driven few).
i think the last problem(high rpm lacking power) might be that im running too lean.. I will have to check it out again next time i take it out...
The owner that handed the bike to me said that he previously had a shop take apart the engine and replace the piston rings.. and he said that the internal parts were in good condition (sleeve, piston), and that he also got the clutch changed.. but im not sure if i can trust him.. the clutch doesn't seem like it has been changed.
once again, thanks so much for the help and I will stay active in this and
rgv forum for many months to come!
