I think your mate maybe exagerating a bit.

the m max box just does the orange and blue wire splice (rc vlave), the gps slicpe that can be done is promised by the m-max box but in reality it does nothing.

I removed the max box from my bike, did the rc valve splice nice and neatly and then took the m-max box to bits.

I created a seperate loom using the m-max connectors, that has the gps splice done, so it can be put in and removed / changed as neccesary, without cutting into the honda loom.

I'm going to take the bike to the dyno in a week or so and see what differance the 3rd gear GPS splice makes in real money.
