You want to clean the float needles and seats, and check the float heights. I rarely turn my fuel tap off, as I always forget to turn it back on when I set off, and it never floods the crankcases.
If the seats and/or needles are worn it will never seal properly, and will cause problems even with the motor running. You can clean the seats up with a little Brasso on a small Q-tip, but if the needles are worn you'll need new ones.
