Hi Barry, plenty of bits will chop and change, an mc18 top end (with carbs, heads etc) makes a good upgrade to the mc16, although there is a possibility of the mc16 ignition system not being up to the job (and why I'm fitting a pgm2 off an mc18 to mine).
You can upgrade most of it, the mc18 swingarm and forks go in as do the later 17" wheels. I'm fitting the mc21 swingarm to mine to aid exhaust clearance, bit more of a ball ache but worth it in the end.
They are pretty well built (it is a honda after all...) and bits do appear from time to time, obviously not as easy as the rgv to get parts but still enough to get by with.
Oh, pistons fit throughout the range, certainly up to the mc21 so no problems there with supplies. TYGA do a good top end rebuild kit with all genuine parts.
I've got a load of mc16 stuff surplus if you need any bits.
