You could try fitting a smaller rear sprocket to the NSR, which would gear it up and use less revs for the same road speed.

Is there a lot of black soot on the tail pipes? The bike may be runing quite rich.

How fast do you normally ride? Do you try to always be in the highest gear? How far is your commute - enough to get the motor warm or all on choke?
