Ok, here is a proceedure that will work and allow your street MC28 to function as per normal:
Yes it weighs a ton and you will notice a difference with it removed.
Disconnect the battery as a precaution, pop the tank off and unplug the electrical connectors in the black plastic box that is part of the power valve servo motor assembly.
Undo the PV pulley and put to one side. Undo the servo motor tray and remove. Undo the main oil resivior tank but do not remove as you should have access to the three bolts with a standard allen key. Remove the three steering lock retaining bolts and then the fun begins!
Take off your top tripple clamp and drop the whole front end about 75mm and the lock will come free. I strung my bike from the roof and lifted the chassis. There was not need to disassemble the front end, whew!
Once you have the lock out take the black plastic cover off and remove the electrics. There is a micro switch there that you can close with a small zip tie that will 'fool' the bike into thinking the lock is still fitted. If you don't do this the bike will not run.
Put this assembly into a watertight bag and it will fit neatly into the space between the pv motor and the oil tank.
Reassemble and you are done.
I am working on a 'plug in' at the steering lock electrical connector that will negate the need to retain the steering lock electrics on the bike. I hope to have that info available in the next few days.
I am also having a blanking plate made to fill the hole left by the lock, it is a huge and very heavy item!, and recommend this for two reasons:
#1 Whilst the lock assy is low grade cast alloy it may provide some rigidity to the steering head, JHA used to make a higher grade replacement item as a 'race' part. Why take a chance? Once I have an accurate template I will be happy to share this.
#2 It will keep any crap from getting to the steering head bearings.
If MC28's were lemons they would be nice big fat ones so losing over half a kilo can't be too bad!.... Just be careful where you park it!
