The way they do it has changed a couple of times;
Old way started 1963 before that they were just like ABC123 or AB1234 for even older (1930's) stuff
"ABC123T"
is an old "T" reg and from the above link you can see its first registered 1978
Newer way started when they ran out of letters
"T123ABC"
is a "T" reg and dates from 1999
New way started once again when they ran out of letters
"AB02ABC"
is an 02 reg and dates from 2002
Grey imports get an age related plate based on it's date of first use abroad. So an imported '93 MC21 gets an "L" reg plate something like L251DRG.
