The concern is not that it's done 3000 miles, the concern is that it's possibly sat untouched in a container in Japan for the last 15 years or more, frozen then thawed out numerous times and any rubber seals (including the crank seals) could well have dried out, cracked and/or perished.
What happens now is when it's fired it up it runs fine for a few (hundred) miles then the crank seals fail. The tell tale for this is it's difficult to start (the failing seal means primary compression at low turnover speeds is poor).
Think about it, there can be no such thing as a mint 20 year old bike with 3000 miles on the clock that's been used regularly and regular use is what keeps rubber seals alive.
