What purpose does the "key" have in the key card for the PGM IV MC28?

I'm checking out Yahoo Auctions and see a variety of these come and go...and in my searches, haven't figured out what the little key does.

Is this just a gimmick? Does everything operate as normal without it?

Keep in mind I'm not talking about the card itself but the triangular key in the top corner.
