When checking the oil level, have the bike upright, not on the side stand.
The oil should come up to the top of the cross hatch pattern on the (very short) dip stick.
But I have to admit, I do not know if you are supposed to screw the filler cap into the case when checking the gearbox oil level, or just sit it on the top of the threads.
