My local shop in the 80's ran HRC backed CR125's and 250's, and they (HRC and the shop) always recommended Castrol's products over Silkolene's, even though they sold both. There was a greater margin in Silkolene, yet they would always push the Castrol. Honda teams across the world have traditionally favoured Castrol and Shell, and still do.
Later on (mid to late 90's) I dealt direct with Fuchs, and I found their approach very uninspiring. I don't recall a mechanical failure personally with Silkolene, but I do recall poor customer service. By far the most helpful and knowledgeable people I have spoken to in recent times are Rock-Oil. Steve's 75hp F-III even ran Rock-Oil semi-synthetic on that last Donington track day, and still never missed a beat.
