Les, that's not entirely correct. If you run anything other than bog-stock settings, then you run the risk of hitting the plug cap. It's even possible if your front forks are a little saggy! If you run HRC settings, or HRC forks, then the short pugs are a must. Some people are also convinced that over-sized tyres are essential, and that will cause problems too.

Yes, you can orientate the head differently, but then you have to consider both the plumbing and coolant flow differences. Just because something worked for you, doesn't mean it's right for everyone... I've seen a lot, and I mean a lot of broken front plug caps over the years!

The racing plugs do gice a far superior spark, even better when combined with HRC coils, although it won't be anything you can physically feel. As with many things, it's all the little bits that add up.
