How to tell what to replace...

das134 » Mon Jul 23, 2012 12:22 am

Hi everyone. I'm just about to strip down my top end to remedy a leaking head gasket problem. Before I get stuck in I wanted to make sure I know what to do/look for.

1. The top end was done on this bike was 'refreshed' (no new pistons) only 15 hours ago. It is a track/race bike that gets a thrashing, but in the interest of time and money, is it necessary for me to strip down the whole top end? Or can I just replace the head gaskets and save the rebuild for next time?

2. If stripping the barrel off is the way to go, how should I approach the piston issue? Tyga don't stock the A cylinder pistons I need and they are very expensive from the UK with my NZ exchange rate. Can I resuse with new rings or old rings with acceptable tolerances? I don't know the general rule with this.

I don't want to skimp, but dont want to replace things if it is not necessary.
