Having seized my NSR at the weekend due to a dodgy hose-clip (lost all its coolant, was pissing it down so didn't notice the damp foot), I started the strip down as I'm racing it next weekend. Found the front cylinder had copped it this time, one that was replated a year or so back. Typical.
It looks as if the plating has 'peeled' off about 40% of the ring travel area during the seizure, at the usual places (front and rear of piston) but also a load has come off one side above the transfer ports. Bugger. It wasn't a huge seize, was slowing for a bend when I felt the motor tighten and just got the clutch pulled in time, was hoping to be able to clean the plating up but without some amazing glue it'll be another replate I guess!
Now this is the 2nd one that's seized this year, the first was due to a small end bearing breaking up, and besides the gouges from the bearing material squashing between piston & bore, it had also removed a lot of plating from the opposite side of the damage.
Both cylinders have been done at the same place, at different times, but I'm wondering if the process isn't quite as good as it should be.
I've not spoken to the company in question, I may drop them an email though.
In the 4 years of racing an RGV, and its many, many, many seizures, I never witnessed damage like this, even on replated cylinders.
Anyone else seen the plating come off in flakes?
