Lockwiring them certainly won't hurt, but the locking plate should last for more than one or two uses if not butchered. You don't need to use both tabs on each bolt either, which effectively doubles their life-span.

At the end of the day though, there's nothing to stop you from making your own locking plates. There's nothing special about them!
