New coils

80XAR » Wed Jan 01, 2014 1:53 pm

I have finally got around to fixing the ignition problem ive been having with my bike. It started with a dead reg/rec. Then a dying battery, and finally a dead coil. Possibly all at the same time, but i did not expect the coil. They both measured the same when tested with a multimeter, but only one would actually run. The other would cut in and out (mostly out). I was considering a 2nd hand unit, but who knows what you are getting (they are 22 plus years old now). Was also thinking of using the HRC items, but were a little to expensive for me (its not a race bike). So, as my brother works at a performace parts shop, ive run some MSD coils (after seeing someone on here had used them over in Malaysia or Thailand). Anyway, results were outstanding, but fitment was a bit of a bitch as they are quiet big.
I run TYGA fairings, so ive removed the std fairing mounts. Had to remove the 2t tank resivoir mount as well and make my own (see next pic). I used one of the factory nutserts, and added 3 of my own.

Its hard to see, but there is a bracket that mounts using the same bolt that bracket on the upper cross bar mounts with (that holds a couple plugs and the servo/valve thingos) and holds the inner resivoir up and in position.

This is what it looks like with the coils mounted. Had to make my own leads from 8.8mm lead to suit. Also used deutch plugs to connect to the loom (very pretty but not in picture). Outer 2t resivoir uses the new upper coil mount (about 10mm higher than the normal mount)

Part i used was MSD # 8230
