One at top front exposed after removing the oil pump and one facing the front. I have searched and the only thing i can find is a picture in the rebuild process clearly showing the top hole. What is the purpose of these holes? Venting? Seems odd to have places where dirt can enter.

Sorry to bring up an old thread...but I'm in the same process and have the same question. Does anyone know the purpose of these holes? Can't seem to find any further information via search. I am assumining I need to tape these holes up when cleaning the motor.

Thanks in advance.
