They can, but it's not ideal (things with slots can, and do move!), and while that short pick-up harness is long discontinued, you can usually find MC16 [or Mk1 MC18] parts on eBay or Yahoo! Auctions these days.

I'd personally rather try get MC16, or adapt '88 MC18, and retain the locating shoulders on the pick-ups wherever possible, given the choice.
