My mc21 tank has rust inside it and I’m not comfortable running the bike off petrol that is in contact with it. I want to get it lined/treated with POR-15. Would any of the learned folk on here recommend it or have any suggestions on alternatives to resolve the tank issue?

I know what you mean - some of the results I’ve seen have been horrendous
Try these guys - their paid for service rather than the DIY option is what you want
I’ve used POR-15 in my other bikes tank and 3 years later it’s still doing fine. The trick is to prep it really well , clean and degrease it etc. I’d buy the complete kit that comes with all the stuff you need to do it properly.

Exactly! Must get tank completely free of rust and any contaminants before applying any kind of coating treatment. Otherwise it won't adhere and end up flaking off in couple years, causing even worse problems than rust.
Personally I prefer chemical rust-removal over mechanical agitation/scrubbing methods. It will leave as much good metal as possible. Important when you've got verify old thin metal to preserve as much as possible. Not all chemicals work equally well either. Most acid treatments will remove good metal as well as rust. Only acid that will have preferential attach on rust and leave good metal alone is phosphoric acid. Can be found at Home Depot as concrete rust/stain remove (read ingredients to make sure it's 100% phosphoric acid). Leaves mildly protective phosphate coating over bare metal after rust is removed.
Then proceed with POR-15 treatment process.
I'm considering nickel-plating inside of tank. Anyone had experience with that?
With regards to phosphoric acid, I wonder how effective filling the tank with Evapo-Rust would be? Seeing some of the stuff Abom on YouTube has cleaned up, it seems to work exceptionally well, and better/less harful than phosphoric acid. Of course, he's not cleaning up old fuel tanks, but it looks like a great product. It's not all that common in the UK yet (just checked, and Tool Station now sell it), but widely available in the US.
Nickel plating the inside sounds interesting. Interested to know how you get on. _________________ Andy.
