Hi, I just picked up 1988 NSR250 SP MC18! Smile

PO had it only short time and got some aftermarket fairings for it.
Seems fairly complete, it's all there, but lacking maintenance:

radiator half-full, slight leak out of lower-cylinder hose when warmed-up
radiator cap wasn't fitting on radiator neck fully, it was bent up. I straightened best I can and sanded top flat and smooth
    no oil in transmission
    forks half empty
petrol stale, I emptied and refreshed
carb in decent shape, I cleaned it up and verified all hoses connected properly, no leaks
petcock wasn't tightened to tank, dripped like mad when turned on. Tightened up ring and it's sealing now.
    tyres 5-yrs old, but unused

So bike sat for at least 5-yrs. It actually started up on 2nd crank! Smile

To do:
- verify oil-pump works properly
- go through and lube all RC valve cables and verify it works properly.

Looks great! Thank's for posting.

I t looks like it could do with some HRC spec link plates for the rear shock, to raise the rear ride height... and a decent [clear] screen! Wink

Made it out to Attesa Podium Club track this last weekend for 3-day outing. It did surprisingly well, exceptional handling. Not ideal bike for this track as it has long straights with 0.85km front straight! I previously reached 240kph on my VFR, but only 170 on NSR. I need to troubleshoot RC valves as they're not opening fully and it doesn't want to rev much beyond 9K.

Are you sure it's delimited? 88-96 are all limited to 180kmh (112mph). The '88 is the simplest of all models to delimit. Wink

Yes, I've found the blk/blu wire and unplugged it. Bike ran same way before & after. I think RC valves aren't fully operational. Need to troubleshoot more, some cables may not be sliding easily.

Just checking... make sure you disconnected the "correct" Blk/Bu wire. If you disconnect the wrong connector, it has no effect!

While the '88 R2/4J isn't as susceptible to poor RC Valve maintenance, it is still possible to damage the controller if the cables are too tight or the valves themselves are sticking due to carbon build up. The '88 system just seems to be a little more robust than the PGM-II/III/IV models, in my experience.

My initial advice would be to disconnect the cables from the servo, start the engine, and steadily increase the revs to approx 3000rpm, where you should see the servo pulley move to the "HI" position. (It will return to "LO" at 4000rpm, or if the revs drop back below 3000rpm) If you don't see pulley move, then the controller is malfunctioning or burnt out.

While the cables are removed, operate the RC Valves on each barrel by hand to ensure they move freely. If they do, then check the cables slide freely, and reconnect them. (Advisable to oil the cables while it's all apart.)
