Hi all
Just wondered if anyone had any experience with the 2 Gear Shift Spindle Oil Seals listed in the parts manual; Part Nos:
- 91202-444-015;
- 91202-444-023 the Alloy Oil Seal
and if one is much better than the other.
My sons NSR250 MC18 fitted with a MC28 R3S Engine had a little, but annoying Oil leak from the Gear Shift Spindle Oil Seal. I replaced said Oil Seal (taking great care with cling film wrapped around Spindle and plenty of Grease applied and driven home with long Socket), but the leak is still there and if anything appears worse.
The only thing I can think of is that there maybe too much play in the Gearbox Housing where the Spindle passes thru causing damage to the Oil Seal, however, this doesn't appear to be any worse than my own NSR250 MC18; or a faulty Oil Seal which I would think highly unlikely as it looked and fitted perfectly (!!or possibly not too perfectly!!) and was a genuine Honda Oil Seal.
Any advice or experience would be gratefully received.
Many thanks
Phil
PS: I must admit this is a first for me, as I have never had any problems replacing Oil Seals before.
I've seen worn shafts before, that no amount of new seals is going to fix. Hopefully it's not that, but it's not a particularly difficult job to pull the clutch cover and extract it for inspection. _________________ Andy.

Hi Andy
Many thanks for the info much appreciated.
If it does turn out to be a worn shaft are there any firms that can remetalize the shaft that you are aware of in the UK? I believe there is such a service in Japan.
I wouldn't say it's common, but just something I have seen. Bear in mind, I've been involved with NSRs for almost 30 years, so I've seen "multiple" instances of things some owners may have never seen in several years of ownership and/or multiple bikes. I'd say you're probably better off sourcing another shaft if it is worn, as the likelihood of getting another worn one is pretty remote.
I have someone I can ask about refinishing one, but the biggest issue is if it's straight. Lots are dropped and, when they have the OEM fold-up footrests, can put enough pressure on the lever to distort the end of the shaft a little. It's not necessarily enough to cause a leak, but when put in a lathe could be enough not to be able to [build it up and] turn it down within tolerance. _________________ Andy.

Many thanks for that, yes will look for a secondhand one.
I know there can be subtle changes leading to a change of Part No. and the MC21 & 28 share the same Part No (24610-KV3-830), but can you substitute a MC18 Gear Selector Spindle (Part No. 24610-KV3-700) as I may have a lead where there is a spare one?
