is everyone else's neutral really hard to find or is it just my bike....

i've been told its easier to find when coming to a stop. everytime im at the lights i cant get neutral until the lights turn green...hahaha...

is having the clutch in at the lights for about 3-4mins detrimental to dry clutch?

Neutral should not be a problem if the clutch cable is correctly adjusted and the plates are all in spec'

As to the question having the clutch in at the lights for about 3-4mins detrimental to dry clutch?

YES!!

Dry or wet clutch.
Especially on the dry clutch!
It will wear the fibres prematurely and risk warping the steels.

You think?

I'd have thought it would just stretch the cable. There's no friction going on if you have the clutch properly adjusted...

No, you shouldn't. What we're saying is that the clutch probably needs adjusting.

hi i had same prob on my rs164, what i did is moved the gear lever 1 notch down so that i could get my foot under with more pressure this cured the prob and neutral came very easy after that.

You will normally get a minute stretch in a new cable after which it won't get any worse.

You can get a small amount of disc flutter even when the cable is pulled in, which causes heat build up due to friction.
It is also in an unnatural state with the clutch springs coil bound and the lifter bearing under load. The end of the clutch lifter rod can also get hammering off the ball bearing.

Next time you watch a Moto GP see how long the riders are sat on the start line with the clutch pulled in.
It won't be for more than about 5-10 seconds max.

If the clutch is all ok and the gearchange is set ok as suggested by "lossa" then another cause could be a worn selector fork.

Hope you managed to get it sorted "dark8"

thanks guys
when you say selector fork are you meaning the gear shift lever? that is a bit bent, and i have experimented with changing to neutral while the bike is slowing down (ie not stationary) and it has seemed easier. I will get the clutch cable looked at as well. Thanks guys

If you are completely stationary with brakes on you may have trouble finding neutral. Most people engage neutral before the bike is completely stopped. If you do reach a complete stop then let off the brakes and just move the bike forward under you.
With gentle pressure on the gear-lever, you literally have to move the bike about 1cm and it'll drop right into neutral.
