Right crankcase cover water pump housing corrosion.

Hey!

Upon finally cleaning up the right crankcase cover, the water pump housing area looks pretty corroded.

I don't think much can be done to the surfaces that mate with any of the seals. I suppose I could hit the walls nearest the impellar with a Dremel to church it up, but was not having any cooling issues prior, other than the rare coolant drip from the weep hole.

What say ye?

Crankcase covers show up on Yahoo Auction here in Japan occasionally. Is it so bad you'd grab another?

While covers are still relatively cheap and available, I would consider grabbing one in better condition. However, while quite badly pitted, yours certainly still looks usable in a pinch with a very light smear of sealant where appropriate.

Dana,
I agree with Andy's comments above and add one further suggestion. Since it looks like corrosion caused the pitting, it is a good idea to check the entire cooling system. The radiator might need a flushing to get any stuff out. Corroded aluminum turns to a chalky white stuff. Typically pretty soft so it isn't gonna damage anything, but could block the radiator passages reducing its effectivity. A good cleaning never hurts. Then use a top brand coolant or just plain distilled water and a bit of water pump lubricant.
