Got light rear brake rotor?

Mon Sep 12, 2005 3:11 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Looking for that competitive edge (which is important since
my bike is sitting in the garage), I came across this website.
I am interested in getting my rear brake rotor lightened. I
talked to the owner. He seems like a real nice guy and is
familiar with the MC28. He has not modified one and says its
not really worth his time until he has an order of about 10.
I get the feeling he would be willing to do it on less than
an order of 10. Ok, who's in? No need to step over each other.

Probably not legal for production racing. If I ever line up against
you I promise I won't rat you out.

Scott

What design are you thinking about. I like the razor Cool that is a new design. I have 3 rotors but I think two of them are warped (one is on my 18 and the other is on my 21). The good one is being put to good use sitting in a box Confused. Is there a price brake if you get 10 done at one time Question
How many poser points is it worth Question
Steve

I raced on a MC28 with a rear rotor that I'd machined down to 3.5mm. Now that's a healthy weight saving if ever there was one!

I raced on it for two years with not one problem.

I'm not a great rear braker myself so a skinny rotor wasn't an issue.

If it was my mate Shane on the other hand, he can fry an R1 Braking rear rotor in just a handful of laps. He's a big lad and must stand on the bugger 90% of the lap!

So, who may be interested in one of these little lovelies then?

I'm currently testing this fully-floating lightweight rear disc for a company with a view to possibly putting it into production, depending on both performance and demand.

Speak up, or forever hold your peace! (Or piece... depending on which way you are inclined!!) Smile

It shouldn't matter! You either want one or you don't! Very Happy

I'll get a rough guesstimate!

How do you mean Dave? The specific rotor I have will fit an MC18 or an MC21, and is to work with the NSR caliper.

I'd need to check it against an MC16, so anyone out there (Jeff350LC!!) with an MC16 who could draw around a rear disc to make a template I can offer it up to...

If you want to have a really trick rear disk for an MC28 you need a HRC one off the back of an RC45, smaller dia and fully vented.. yours for £209 from your local HRC dealer.

You would also need a new caliper bracket making up to reposition the caliper.

My views:

If you want major pose value then do as Stephen says and fit an HRC rotor, then CNC up the necessary bracket, anodize it a funky colour and cruise around showing it off at every opportunity. It is HRC after all. Don't forget to keep telling everyone that fact either. On a posistive side you'd be pretty sure it was gonna work.

Or, you could buy Andy's when it's fully tested. Looks rather fine to me, and I'm sure that it'll get it's weight in poser points, which won't be many then!

Those machined rotors look cool, but I'd like to try before I buy. I tested a bunch of 'modified' front rotors some time back and everyone warped like a Pringle with a bit of abuse cos they couldn't get rid of the heat.

Or, if you're a cheapskate like me who'd rather spend cash on tyres than bling then skim you're stock rotor to lighten it up. Won't get any cheers in the boozer but will do the job.

Finally though, if you're just into hooning around the streets, with the occasional track day then the stock rotor will do you fine. It stops, doesn't exactly weigh a ton, and I've seen far uglier.

In the UK back in the early '90's when I was wobbling round on an RS125 there were some guys trying aluminium, and also carbon rotors. Neither really worked for shite, but they got through scrotum-neering and that was about it. The carbon was actually supposed to make a noticeable difference to the handling, even for the average rider, but I never had the pleasure.

We could knock up a carbon rotor tomorrow, but there's no way I'd guarantee it for anything other than hanging on the wall. Might be good for a picture to post to Andy in a vain attempt at some extra poser points though.

Hmmm.
