hey all,
my bike did this strange thing the other day, i was riding along and decided to give it a bit of throttle, but as soon as i hit about 9000rpm it went all spluttery and lost power. when i let go of the throttle it would die. i got it home (luckily only 50 metres) by adjusting the idle to a higher position and giving it a fair bit of throttle.

Now what happens is the bike will only fire up for about 1 second on the first kick, but only if i havent touched it for a day or so. If i have touched it recently it s just like the keys arent in, nothing . There seems to be nothing in the two float bowl things just by looking at them and flicking them, but i am yet to actually remove them.

So anyway, i think the problem is something is blocked up in the carbs and want to remove and clean them. If there is any detailed page explaining how to do this could you please tell me. I just want to make sure i dont feck it up worse than it already is

Check your plugs first before pulling the carbs. Just a thought. Might save you some trouble.

Looking and flicking the float bowls? I'm not sure I understand you.

To check fuel is in the float bowls whilst the carbs are still installed, undo the drain screw a couple of turns and fuel should flow...

As just mentioned though, remove the spark plugs and tell us what colour they are.

yeh thats probably what i weas looking at are they meant to be empty? im going to take the whole lot off the bike on sunday and make myself familiar with how it all works. even if it isnt a carb problem id like to know whats going on in there

Yes they are. They tune the inlet tract and fool the engine into making a better spread of power.

Take pics as you dismantle, just incase!

ok i started pulling stuff apart today and ive taken note of everything ive done. there just two things left attached to the carbs that i wasnt able to remove easily, so i thought id ask first.

first thing is the little three wire thing that seems to be a part of the throttle assembly on the right side sitting on the bike. it seems easiest to unplug it there, however the screw holding it in place is inaccessible to any of my screw drivers

second thing is the throttle cables. i cant get the cables loose enough to detach them from the wheel thing... is there another way to do it?

please share your wisdom!

It sounds like you're talking about the TPS... Just unplug it, DO NOT UNSCREW the sensor. This has a tamper TORX head for that very reason. It is set at the factory and removal could prevent your bike from making any power of any use...

I'm not sure this is what you mean so apologies if it isn't, just thought it sensible to warn you incase it was!

I'm with you Maxim. Follow the wires to the plug at the frame, and disconnect it there.

As for the throttle cables, loosen the locknuts, and screw the cables in to give you some slack. Just enough to slip the cable over the edge of it's guide.

Rotating the throttle mechanism at the carb will make it easier to remove the close cable and oil feed cables.

hey again,

ive just got the carbs off the bike and on my desk today. The float bowl for the lower cylinder had a few bits of crap in it so ive cleaned that out, but now i need to clean the brass jet/needles. Is there anything i should be careful of before removing these?? Im sure i saw somewhere i had to count the no. of turns?

can anyone tell me whereabouts is the air screw ? is it part of the air jet? how do you get it out to clean it? (as its smooth).
