Rebuilding forks on MC18

Thu Sep 30, 2004 8:48 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Hi all,

I need to rebuild the front forks on my 89 MC18. Does anyone have any step by step instructions and the part numbers for the fork seals?

I also need to know what quantity of oil is required per leg.

Many thanks

I can divulge the oil information later, after consulting the NSR Bible! The strip-down is pretty straight-forward, and I'll let you know the part numbers later too; once I get home.

Andy.

I think stock oil is 410cc per leg, I went for 420cc cos im too tall and too fat for the average NSR fork. I also used 10w oil. I cant remember the air gap now sorry.

Hi,

Any more info on how to do the fork seal replacement? I currently have the forks off the bike, I have undone the bolt at the bottom which I thought held the forks together, however they are still not coming apart so I cannot change the seals.

ANy help or instructions would be gratefully received!

Cheers

First you have to remove the fork dust seal. Under that you will find a wire clip. Flick that out and then pull the leg out. It will be stiff as you are also pulling out the oil seal at the same time. You normaly have to yank them pretty hard. hope that helps

Thanks very much.

You was not wrong about having to yank them though. I was sure there was another clip or something, then all all a sudden they came apart.

The seal kit part number is 51490-MN8-503. You will need two kits (one for each leg of course).
