Getting ready for spring....

Mon Apr 16, 2007 2:51 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

I have an MC18 that I am getting out and ready for spring...
It is all stock except Tyga-pipes and a foam air filter replacement.
the front cylinder dies after going about 100 meters with a new
plug, but the top runs perfect. All jets are stock. I get spark on the
front but soon the plug is just wet. Here in michigan I am at 761ft elevation so I expect standard jets are ok....Is it possible to get an air filter for this
bike...or with just a piece of foam similar thickness and density suffice?

I am really passonate about getting this MC18 going....I like MC18's the best because it most closely resembled my '91 RS250 in Japan. But for
some reason, the even the RS wasn't as finiky as this thing...

My '89 RGV 250 naked "Wolf" ran perfect for years...

where do I start?

I am pretty good with tools and am a science teacher and am good
at following lab procedure...if any fellow nsr-lovers can take the time to be my guide on the side, I would like to get this baby that needs to be ridden
on the road and reliable...I am concerned about getting good power,
but mostly reliability and make it my daily rider.

I think that this bike was preveously owned by a woman on this site from
virginia...it is an MC18 with custom Rothman's scheme and originally imported and titled in Arizona....now It is Michigan registered.
Anyone know who I am talking about....

And CHeck out the cool MC18 on ebay...I like.

Thanks,
Rob Johnston

The front plug dies after just a short run...

looking at the plug and spark....it will spart up through the post to the side...
does that mean that it died from to much compression...
with the tyga pipes?

and the post it broken?

or from heat, and I should go with a 10 instead of a 9?

or is it just from fouling and I should go with an 8 to keep it
hotter and cleaner.

I'm not entirely sure what you mean here (a little proof-reading of your post before clicking submit would help!) but reading between the lines would suggest a buggered spark plug, or maybe a coil breaking down.

Stick with the recommended BR9ECM spark plugs. Fit new ones if you are unsure of their age and/or condition.

TYGA chambers will have no significant bearing on compression ratio.

Thanks Andy...

I called a local two-stroke expert...he said to drain the old gas and use a propane torch to burn the carbon out of the plug...

Swapped the plugs to run the dirty one on top and clean it up a bit.....

The bike has been roaring up and down the road all afternoon.

Worked!

If anyone has info on where to get a stock air filter, the info would be
appreciated.

I wonder...what is the significance of tyga pipes as opposed to stock....
Are they just tuned to give a different powerband (higher and tighter) ?

Pretty much.

They also look a lot neater than stock chambers, as well as being about 1/3 of the weight.
