David Kitchen from Rayong in Thailand is having jetting issues with his grass strimmer. He asked what the corerct procedure was for chopping and came up with this:

No joke, my strimmer has a jetting issue. Now how do you do a plug chop on that. Do I cut long grass really quickly and then hit the kill switch. The last bit was a joke after all.

Well, I don't have any other better suggestions so I think he's got the answer

Well, Id say it need to be on a fair bit of load, so maybe he needs to hold it flat out while strimming thick grass (like he says) while running up hill with it.

I'll lend him my weather station so that once he's got it sorted he can keep notes. Then if he's strimming in the morning, or middle of the hot afternoon he can quickly get to the right jet for the job.

With my sensible head on... which doesn't happen very ofte, I admit...

The strimmer needs to be held flat out, with a blade or full head of nylon. Adjust the mixture screw for max RPM, then back in just until it starts "4-stroking". This is when the type of motor used makes the most power (or is that torque... dunno, the term 4-stroking scares me!).

This is the same for petrol disc cutters, post hole borers, chainsaws etc.

(Semi) interesting note about the disc cutters... the instructions with the rebuild kits for them tell you to fit the new cylinder and piston, fire them up, set the carb as above, then hold them FLAT OUT CONTINUOUSLY for 60 seconds to run them in!!

I plug chopped our 60's chainsaw the other day...came out a bit lean if anything, but seasoned Ash can be tough. Or prehaps it could be my porting and homemade pipe needing a richer mix?

Our strimmer carburates terribly though, so maybe it's an inherant fault in these modern emission freindly times. A prime case for unearthing the porting tools prehaps?

I love those chainsaws with expansion chambers!

Hi guys and Matt,

The grass strimmer (weed eater for the Americans) is totally related to NSR's; I have a couple in the house (NSR's) and was finding it difficult to move them through the garden from the back door. I bought a strimmer as a NSR accessory to clear the way, if you know what I mean.
By the way, the original post was about me. I live not far from Bira in Thailand and Matt is giving me 90hp? for one of my bikes (it has a pink chain)!

Of course I appreciate what you did. I guess the pink chain gave it away; I would call it reddish though. You must have worked on it just before I bought it.
I already had a NSR and took it apart completely. I thought instead of looking at drawings, why not buy another to copy for the rebuild. Already I'm looking at a third and the bike you know is going 300,wiseco,vhm,39's etc. etc.
I blame this obsession on Matt, I have several other bikes (3 more 2 strokes) blade etc. and my wifes last words as she left never to return was, you love those bikes more than me. It was probably the first words of truth she said in a year.
Good riddance I say, I would rather a NSR.
