Oil leak question

Sun Apr 06, 2008 12:28 am » Post: #1 » Download Post

Gents,

Took the shroud that covers the flywheel off today. Unfortunately I found a small build up of oil on the out side bottom of the flywheel. I assume there is a engine seal behind the flywheel somewhere? I guess I need the removal tool. What should I expect behind it? Anybody hazard a guess? Is there an aftermarket or freewheel upgrade? Thanks-

Michael

Leaky crank seal maybe, does it look like two stroke oil.

Easiest test is to spray the seal with something like CRC and see if it blows bubbles when it's turned over. You'll need the proper puller to get the flywheel off.

Online parts manual has it under crank assembly.

Yep, it's oil. Pretty fresh looking. From the gearbox right? Thanks. I will get the tool coming and check it out. Thanks again-

If it's leaking from behind the flywheel it's 2T mix from the crankcase.

You cannot replace the crank seal(s) without splitting the cases. The job can be done however, without removing the motor from the chassis if necessary.

Thanks Andy. Is it something I should just live with for now until I do more engine work down the road? The bike has not been riden much...do the seals shrink? I don't remember seeing this before. Advise-
