Registered for the forum quite a while ago after buying my first NSR, but got sidetracked for a while and never really used it. Now the build is back on, i just ordered some Tyga RSW bodywork and i'm quite keen to get this thing complete and on the track! Only i've hit a stumbling block..
I built it from the ground up, finally got everything in it's right place and began running it in (engine just been rebuilt) So i did this with the bike on the stand a few times, next step was to put some load on the engine and take it for a ride. Well that's as far as i got. Clicking into first gear just killed the engine...CRAP!!
Anyway, i figured it had something to do with the side stand wiring (even though the stand had been removed) so i tried bridging the plug with a split pin....no joy. I even went as far as putting the stand back on until i realized the plug from the loom doesn't actually match the plug from the stand! The previous owner had made a few odd modifications (which may be why it's different) but otherwise everything is completely stock. Can anyone help as to what it might be? What i can try?
I had looked there to try and find any other link to the kill switch but still couldn't figure it out. It still starts and runs no problem, just can't put it in gear!
nxrsr20, hi mate. I thought that was you! I realized after i replied to the race club post.. Checked out the pics too. Just made me even more keen!!
I had tried bridging the plug with a pin. The warning light came on so i figured it was switching the circuit on/off. Still nothing though. I'll have another look tmw and let you know how i go. If I have no luck i'd very much appreciate you taking a look.

Not necessarily, a peer at the wiring diagram reveals three wires from the sidestand switch, one to earth (green), one to the sidestand light (yellow/black) and one to the PGM (green/white), it'll be the yellow/black that turns the light on and off and the green/white that controls the sidestand down/in gear engine kill.
What I'd do is flick that pin out of it's plug out at the PGM end, it's the only green/white pin in the black plug and try again.
The only other thing I can think of that would kill it when you put it in gear is the clutch not clearing properly, just give it a decent handful of revs as you click it into gear but be ready for it to actually move! _________________ Please do not PM me technical questions, if you can't find it on the Forum start a thread
I got all excited and pulled that wire out of the PGM plug today but unfortunately it didn't work. Also tried the clutch. I had it on the race stand so it would have started turning the wheel at least. Even if there was no clutch at all it would still bang into gear and run wouldn't it?
As soon as you tap the gear lever the rev counter shoots straight to zero.
I'm really at a loss here as to what it could be. Is there anything in the rebuild of the engine that could cause this? Gear in the wrong way or something?
Depends, not if it is the sidestand switch that's causing the problem (and it sounds like it's got to be), an mc21 will not run in gear with the sidestand down, full stop.
Try earthing that wire instead, that's the two states it can be in, earthed or not, there is no power at the sidestand switch.
I'd presumed it earthed it when the stand was up, maybe not. _________________ Please do not PM me technical questions, if you can't find it on the Forum start a thread
