recently bought mc16, in process of doing basic checks or trying the budget doesnt allow for a service from a bike shop, so noticed my spark plugs are black and my exhausts are very oilly at the tips.
i know somethings not right, but what can be done? _________________ Just Bought MC16.
just used this thread to solve my oily tip and black park plug disease...
cleaned my air filter and slapped some new plugs in...hey presto ! no oil dripping from stingers and a scarily zingy but nice and healthy ring a ding ding !!! will obvioulsy take care to make sure it's not gone too lean on me !
i just thought i'd give you a bit more information about myself since i didn't introduce myself properly.
really wanted an nsr for such a long time ever since i took my brother's mc21 for a run one day,
got word this guy was selling his one and i just couldn't resist,
okay, the bike itself, been standing still for 5 years in the guys backyard and has been completely neglected, so now i have it in my garage, it looks a bit horrific but i'm gonna give it a go.
since then i bought a new battery and surprisingly all the electricals work,
put some petrol in a gave it a kick and started first time.
so now i'm in the process of trying to restore the bike because there's lots of bits and pieces missing but i'm taking it one day at a time.
good luck to me... _________________ Just Bought MC16.
what kind of oil are you using Dave? you have a great amount of carbon build up on yours then my... i am using castrol racing 2T full synthetic, i am getting 0 carbon on the ground casing of the plug. everytime i take them off to have a look i get a silver ring, but the center and the ground electrode is dark brown. i saw on some plug reading pages it means i am jetting lean... but i am thinking it has to do with the oil i am using. _________________ feel the wind
putoline TTX fully synthetic for me. that plug had been cleaned up a little aswell. i'm putting it down to the dirty air filter for now. i'll update you when i've been running with a clean filter for while.
firstly, checked my airfilter which is non exsistent, all thats inside the air box are two round sponges that the previous owner put inside to do what i dont know. i dont think any of the shops round here will stock an air filter, any idea what i can do? _________________ Just Bought MC16.
If the sponge is thick they might ristrict a lot of air flow, thus you will have a very rich mixture.
buy a sheet of filter and trim it by the help of the grid as a template. dont trim too close so you can get a tight fit on the box. _________________ feel the wind
oh... i think with your situation you should just buy pod filters and fix them on, i dont think its going to be easy to get that grid on its own unless someone with open carbs will give you there originals.
But if you want to have a go at the foam i remember it was arround 1.5cm to 2cm thick. _________________ feel the wind
thanks dude,
think i'll have a go at the foam first and see how that works, talking about a rich mixture,
i was wondering why my bike was so rich now it makes sense the old foam that was in there was about 5cm thick, no wonder, and i just noticed as well that the one carb wasn't properly inserted into the rubber housing business,
could that also be why the one side was richer than the other? _________________ Just Bought MC16.

If it's being strangled by a clogged filter, and the carb not fitted correctly was drawing air, then yes that would lead that cylinder to run leaner (or the other cylinder to appear richer). _________________ Andy.
