I have recently had issues with the CDI units on my bike well one in particular (MC16 has 2). This unit controlled the tachometer/rev counter also and so the key symptom was the rev counter going nuts when the ignition was turned on and dropping a cylinder when started.
Having searched the globe I found various used units at rather high prices in south africa and australia but considered £120+ to be excessive for a used unit.
I finally gave in and rang Wemoto for ideas they put me in touch with David Silver spares who I currently have a brand new unit on order with from Japan for £103 inc vat and delivery. GREAT !
In the meantime I found this guide on a XL600R forum ref CDI's of the same year...ironically the part number is almost identical and the XL also had 2 x CDI units made by the same manufacturer.
This guide highlights design floors with the CDI's and how to repair them.
So, as I had a new unit on the way I took the dremel to the faulty unit and quickly identified (after picking of rubber sealant under cover) a component leg with no solder.
I then resoldered the leg and tested.
Started first kick !! SUPERB
I then replaced cover and used a silicone sealant to finish the job.
I am going to keep the new unit as a spare but the bike has started and ran perfectly ever since.
So to summerize this repair technique does work if you have a little electrical knowledge and a keen eye and can save you £100.
I'd be happy to perform the repairs on your broken CDI's for a small fee also so please pm me.
i think i'm going to give it ago as i've got nothing to lose. i had been wondering about doing it but didn't know where to start or whether it was worth even chancing a start on it. It seems plausible and if nothing else it'll give me a bit of quality time with the bike.
Sorry to ressurect an old thread but I have 3 dead cdi's off an mc16. One of which was working fine, the bike put away for a month or so then when the bike was brought out of hiding it was only running on 1. Swapped the cdi's round and the problem moved cylinders.
Saw this post and so far have stripped them back to the boards but cannot see any sign of dry joints, have con checked from the plug to the board and that seems fine.
Any other ideas?
Thanks

hi jimmy and thanks for the tip
iwonder if some thing worng in one of cdi's that makes one of exhaust leak oil the front cylinder
and my tachometer dos not reach further than 5
Jimmy - Hey, I guess I will be stripping the CDI tonight, my mc16 goes onto one cylinder when riden hard, and the rev counter goes to zero. I wondered if it might be a coil, but wasn't sure how to test, because it is intermittent.
Sorry to be a gimp, but i am on the bamboo-internet and cannot access the refered Link=> http://www.ta-deti.de/ta/knownproblems.html .... is it possible to post the entire thing here so to make it easier to find?
Dear NSR World Guys, I am here in Zhuhai and have spent quite some long time tracking-down Repro-Parts, NOS and mounds of used bits-and-bobs. For example, recently i luckily found Reproduction MC16 [series1] CDI Boxes. If there is any interest in these types of various items, maybe our man Andy or whomever will list them on the NSR World Parts-Bin. Just an FYI.... terrylinebarger.at.yahoo.com
