I dont have to, no. But I dont know the history of the bike, or when it was last changed, or even when it was last ridden, so I'm going to replace all fluids etc..

So would 10W40 be the ideal to go for? Also, fully synth or semi?

only use synthetic oil if you are using motorcycle oil. car oil is no good for a wet clutch. use a normal 10w40 and change it more often and it will be fine.

Be careful here Exclamation

Andy swears by Rockoil synth gear oil.
It's the green stuff and he runs his 21 on it.
I tried it in an Yam 2 stroke twin and it went granular and very viscous.
I use light gear oil in all the strokers but apparently not for NSR's so check first.

I use Motul TransOil.
Was recommended by other NSR riders.

Right, think I got a bit lost there.

Am I right in saying that motorcycle gearbox oil (for 2 strokes anyway) does not come in a grade, ie: 5w40 or whatever, and its just gear oil? Question

yes its just gear box oil. i,ve only ever used car type engine oil in my gear boxes and have never had any trouble. but i do change it every 2-3000 miles. its down to you as to what you want to put in yours.
its a bit like two stroke oil. someone will only use rock and say its the best, some will only use motul etc.
if your that worried go and buy a good make gear box oil from you honda dealer, and ask them if its ok for an nsr.

Yeah, I've not had a 2 stroke for about 9 years now! And my last bike was a 750 about 5 years ago, just couldn't remember what I used thats all.

I've been pulling apart car engines for the last 5 years so need to get familiar with bikes again!

Apex Leisure confirmed that the correct gearbox oil for NSR's is a 'light' or a 10/40 'Gear oil'. ie not engine oil.

Pop to your local dealer see what they sell, I'd tend to go for a m/bike specific semi/fully synth branded oil.

Could talk individual brand's all day but is one any better than the next, if so how do ya know if it meet's the same spec???

If you com along to the dyno day, there will be a Rockoil guy there - he can tell you what's what.

I'll probably come along anyway, going to get all the fluids in there this weekend. Got an ignition barrel coming over hopefully next week some time from Hong Kong (I think) and a front mudguard on order with Apex, just need an MOT and fill in the paperwork to send of to DVLA to get it registered, then its getting sprayed up in Telefonica Moviestar colours.
I cant wait!!! Very Happy
