Aftermarket Regulator?

Wed May 12, 2010 3:19 pm » Post: #1 » Download Post

Does anyone have experience with using a aftermarket regulator-rectifier on their NSR? Supposedly this is "heavy duty" (whatever that means) and has surface cooling fins.

I am running higher wattage headlamp bulbs and haven't run into any issues yet with the stock regulator, but was wondering if this might prevent problems.

I've been running an Electrosport for over 3 years with no problems; I don't recall if it is this exact model, but it does have finning and it is for an NSR. I'd say go for it if it is the correct application.

Have you run them through a relay or on the old wiring - and if so how much more wattage?

I'm running regular H4 bulbs with the stock wiring (MC28). They are rated 55/60, as opposed to the stock NSR bulbs which are 35/60, so in theory they are still in spec for what the wiring is rated to handle. The only issue was getting the H4 bulbs to fit, as the retention tabs are slightly different. I bought a set of bulb converters made for a ST1100 (they use the same stock bulbs as the NSR).

I've been reading the threads about the 250 and 400 gray bikes blowing the regulators when they change to higher wattage bulbs, but I believe that they have 45/45 stock bulbs.

I may be wrong bit I think the issue with the 400s is with it burning the switch out as well as the reg rect.

Oh no mate, you're 100% spot on. The stock setup cannot handle UK spec 55/60w H4 bulbs. Jap bulbs are 35w on the headlight.
Uk spec VFR400's had a relay, RVF400's and Jap VFR400's run the headlights (35w) straight through the switch and the main beam (60w) through a relay.
That switch (the push button on the l/h switch gear) is what burns out and when it does so your headlights go out!

There was once a how to wire the headlights via a relay thing on 400greybike, possibly written by LP.............

Not sure about the '18 and '21 but the '28 does run the headlight through a relay so it shouldn't matter.
