we like to smash our frames on the pavement...
I've asked the same question before...
here's a good explanation why:
Nobody has a set designed specifically for the NSR But If they did they would look like ducati or rc51 sliders. They have a rod that goes through the motor mounts and the puck bolt to there. Prolly the only way to make them strrong enough, but honestly the NSR motor mounts are pretty puny so any good hit with frame sliders attached would surely bend the frame.
Hey guys I asked the same question a few months back and I have been put onto a guy that custom made some for his race MC21.
I am awaiting info and piccs from him so that I can manufacture some for my 28. will keep you guys informed as soon as I finish.
Please let me know if you guys find something off the shelf.
That would save me some time.
Is it Glenn who you've been put onto? He made some at work out of nylon for his bike and i reckon a guy called Jason Dawes (who recently defected to Aprilia...) also used some.
They mount on the long bolt that goes through the engine at the front and the two hangers that drop down from the main frame spas. Might be ok if you have a tame low side but if the bike landed on one of the sliders from a highside or hit a curb as it slid along the ground, the impact would bend the frame hangers and push the engine to one side, knackering the frame. As the dude above points out.
There aren't any really strong places to put any sliders on the frame.
When i highsided my '21 at Cadwell park, it landed on the right handlebar, snapping it and the throttle assembly in half and pushed the forks out of line. If it'd landed on a frame slider mounted off the front engine hanger, the force would've bent something much more important than any paintwork it might've saved. _________________ After years of moaning about immigrants now i am one...
Hi Ya Hermit, How are things by Windy Wellington?
It is Glenn that I am dealing with, but he has been MIA of late, so just patiently waiting and checking in every so often.
Taking into account about what you have mentioned, How are we going to get around this pickle?
How do the RGVs, Aprilias,TZR or even the four stroke cousin CBR get around this problem? Similarly are there frame sliders available for the bigger brothers of the NSR? (VFR, RVF)
I'll tell you what mate, its hard to feel home sick when the weather's consistantly as wet as it has been just lately round these parts!
Regarding the crash protection; well to be honest my plan was to just let the fairing take the abuse if i dropped it! Though the paint job and bodywork on my track bike are expendable and i carry a couple of spare sets of all the levers, footpegs, bars, cables and bits that would likely get broken in a crash so i can fix things whilst still at the track. My fairing still has most of the battle scars from the Cadwell crash on it actually, i had to replace the Tyga top fairing which smashed after the handle bar snapped, but all the other plastics are just as they were before i left England. I bent the Tyga top fairing bracket straight again and re-used that too. The worst thing was my expansion chamber got bent over the gull-arm but this too has since been fixed.
I've never looked too close at crash protection on other bikes but i'll make a point of checking it out when i next go up to Manfeild in a couple of weeks.
I know on my Dad's 929 Fireblade its got bungs mounted off the main engine hangers near the head but those hangers are very short and massive looking with big meaty welds and they sandwich the engine between the frame spas, rather than the way the NSR engine hangs way beneath its frame. You can see the area is easily strong enough to take a BIG impact - probably helped by the fact that its a semi-pivotless frame so the engine is a fully stressed chassis part. _________________ After years of moaning about immigrants now i am one...
